1. The Bottle

Pure essential oils should be contained and sealed in a dark amber glass bottle. Essential oils react with plastic containers and are sensitive to light that can lead to losing their therapeutic properties.

2. How It Was Harvested and Produced

Since essential oils come from plants that are grown, it is important that those plants are thriving. You need to make sure that the plants are grown in regions where they will thrive and that the ending oil is pesticide-free. The oil should also be extracted in a way the preserves its therapeutic properties and doesn’t add any toxins.

3. The White Paper Test

If an oil is truly 100% pure, it shouldn't leave any residue on the paper after it dries. 100% of the oil will evaporate. If they are diluted with a carrier oil like coconut oil, then you'll end up with an oily residue.

4. The Smell Test

The smell of the oil depends on how it was sourced, planted, and farmed. But, the smell of the purest oils won't be a lot weaker or a lot stronger than it should be. You can do research on how the aroma should smell on a certain essential oil you want to buy.

A legit essential oil company should be transparent on how they test their essential oils, and the best companies provide a GC/MS report on each of their essential oils to prove their purity. This is a test that breaks down the oil by its components to make sure it meets quality standards and doesn’t have any foreign adulterants.
