Conifers are so hard to differentiate--especially when they all just look like Christmas trees to me! Who knew that trees like fir and pine had so many properties that were beneficial not only for the Christmas spirit, but also for our health! Fir trees are especially amazing at making your home smell like a winter wonderland. Let’s dive into the curious background and find out more about our little conifer friends!
Fir Needle essential oil belongs to the Abies genus of the family Pinaceae, most commonly extracted from either the Abies Alba and the Abies Balsamea. Although the Abies genus are not as commonly used in aromatherapy practice as other oils, they are very common in the fragrance industry for their fresh scents.
Pinaceae grows all through much of North and Central America, Europe, North Africa and Asia, but is most commonly found in abundance in the mountain regions where the weather is much cooler. There are about 50 species in the subsequent Pinaceae family. Fir trees are evergreen coniferous trees that can grow up to 10 to 80 meters. The branches spiral around the tree the older it gets, making it easy to tell the age of the tree. Unlike many evergreen species, the cones grow face up instead of down.
Fir Needle essential oil has a distinct fresh, woody and earthy scent, very similar to that of its tree.
This blends well with essential oils Coriander, Copaiba, Cypress, Fennel, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Geranium, Juniper Berry, Laurel Leaf, Black Pepper, Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, and Tea Tree.
